About
Silver Ace Aviation
Silver Ace Aviation was founded in 1930 by Col. Lee Mercure and his wife Nan.
Silver Ace was one of the earliest aviation endeavors of its day; providing flight
training to pilots in and around Monroe, MI. Lee trained pilots in OX5 powered
Eaglerocks, Hisso powered Standards, Jennys, Travel Airs, and other vintage aircraft.
Lee’s efforts, among a select few, helped pave the way for the budding aviation
industry in the United States. In addition to providing flight training, Lee and
Nan were two of America’s original “Barnstormers”, providing rides and shows all
over the North Central United States.
Shortly before WWII, Lee became an inspector with the Civil Aeronautics Authority
(which later became the FAA). During WWII, Lee served as a test pilot in the Army
Air Corps, and later served as a test pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean
War. Lee retired from the service to continue his career in the CAA as a Senior
Inspector. Lee retired from the FAA as the GADO Chief in Atlanta, Ga. Because
of his military service and FAA duties, Silver Ace Aviation was dormant from WWII
to 1980, when it was resurrected by Lee’s son, Bill Mercure.
